Lady Cougars Lose First Region Game

The Piedmont Academy varsity softball team wasn’t quite able to come from behind this time.

The Lady Cougars dropped a 5-3 decision to Flint River Tuesday in a battle of programs which have been frequent visitors to the state Final Four of late. Piedmont is now 4-1 overall and 0-1 in region play.

“It was a good game,” said coach Danny Camp. “It went down to the wire. We have to find a way to put it behind us because we still have a long season in front of us. I am proud of our players. They really wanted this one bad.”

Flint River took a 3-0 lead on the strength of two homers in the fifth. After the Lady Cougars managed to even the score, the visiting Lady Wildcats pushed two more runs across in the top of the seventh inning.

“It’s tough, but we’ll have to find a way to beat them when we go to their place,” Camp said.

Prior to Tuesday, the Lady Cougars defeated the Gwinnett Lady Barons 6-5 and Loganville Christian Academy 12-4 Saturday in a pair of home games.

Piedmont had to rally from a 5-0 deficit against Gwinnett. A two-run homer by Kacy Swart helped spark the comeback. The Lady Cougars eventually won in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Swart also earned the win in the first varsity contest Saturday. In the second contest of the day, Piedmont once against fell behind early but battled back.

“Our bats finally woke up,” Camp said. “We had been putting runners in scoring position and then came through.”

A bases clearing double by Haley Taylor was a key part of the comeback. We pitched well and played solid defense,” Camp said. Martin earned the victory against LCA.

The Lady Cougars will travel to Windsor in Macon today, Aug. 23, at 6 p.m.
