‘Canes Fall to Morgan County

The ‘Canes traveled to Madison last Friday night and were defeated 34-6 by the Morgan County Bulldogs.

The good news is that Morgan has transferred to Region 8-AAA, so it was not a region game for the ‘Canes, who play in Region 4-AA and won’t begin region competition until September 28.

Head Football Coach Eddie Roberts said, “We got some experience for some kids who had never participated in varsity competition. All of our young people played and they played hard for four quarters and didn’t quit. The game also enabled us to get some film so we’ll know what to work on. We did lose Quentin Manning to a knee injury, but we hope he’ll be back in a week or so.”

The lone score for the ‘Canes was a 45 yard run by Quarterback Lane Thomas.

The photo on the front page shows where two ‘Cane defenders hit the Morgan County ball carrier hard, making him lose the ball, but the officials said the player was ruled down before the ball came out.

The ‘Canes will be on the road again tomorrow, Sept. 7 at Social Circle to take on the Red Skins, who lost their first game last week 38-6 to Strong Rock Christian out of Locust Grove.

Coach Roberts said, “We’re trying to get better offensively as a team so we can take the pressure off of a few. We’ll still run the option against Social Circle, but we’ll try a few new things. On defense, we’ll stick with what we have. I told the kids not to be concerned about who we’re playing but rather to try and get better as a team and get ready for region play later in the season.”

All games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
