Lady Canes Defeat Lamar Co.

The Monticello Lady Canes softball team won 6-1 over Lamar County last Thursday.
Taylor Garrett was on the mound for the ’Canes and earned the win holding Lamar to one run, scored in the first. She recorded five strikeouts. On the offensive side of the ball Garrett led the hitting 4-4 with two doubles and two singles.
Lamar battled during its first at bat as the leadoff batter made it to first on a bunt. There was then a 3-1 put-out and the leadoff batter stole third. She eventually made it all the way around to score, which would be Lamar’s only run, on a two-out bloop single.

The ‘Cane offense was quiet for the first two innings, with a Garrett double in the first providing the only base runner.
The third told quite a different story when the Lady Canes bats came alive. They batted around the line-up with Janee Chapman, Kaitlan Needham, Garrett, Destiny Glawson, and Paissley Stewart all reaching base. Chapman and Stewart each had stolen bases in the third.
The bats remained hot for the Canes through innings 4, 5 and 6 with the ladies coming out on top.
Chapman was 3 for 4, Glawson went 2 for 4. Stewart had a single and two walks.
“This game was very deceiving. It probably looked like we were playing a below average team, but in reality, they are probably one of the top two or three teams in the region,” said Coach Chris Jenkins. “We just played an all-around solid game.
“They came into the game leading the region in runs scored, but were only able to muster two hits, and four base runners. One of those hits was a bleeder off the end of the bat that drove in their only run of the game.
“For the first time this season, all four aspects of the game, pitching, defense, hitting, and base running, were nearly flawless. This was a huge win over a team that has really given us trouble in the past. Hopefully it will give us a little momentum going into the two biggest weeks of the season,” the coach said.
“We play two teams that are ranked in the top 10 this week. Then we play Jackson and Mary Persons, at the Recreation Department next Monday, in the first round of our annual tournament, the Deer Capital Classic.
“We would like to invite the community to come out and see some great softball, and to see the improvements that have been made at the Recreation Fields.”
Games start at 4:30 on Monday and Wednesday, and the Championship Round will start at 9 a.m. Saturday.
