City Sidewalk Repairs Phase I Under Way

Sidewalk repairs have been designated by the city of Monticello to be funded from the most recent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).
Jordan Engineering recently performed a survey of sidewalks in the city to identify the most significant trip hazards. The repair project will address the most hazardous locations—probably around 60 total locations. The project has two phases.
Each City Councilperson also was to review his or her district and make suggestions for where repairs are needed.
In the first phase, the city contracted with Georgia Safe Sidewalks, Inc. to cut the concrete in locations where one panel of sidewalk has been raised above the adjoining
one creating a trip hazard (top photo). The saw cut creates a smooth, ADA-compliant transition in those locations.

Thirty-five trip hazards over 3/4” height have been repaired for $3,500. This method is very cost effective, said City Manager Bob Schwartz and City Engineer Robert Jordan, but can only be used in certain situations.
The second phase of work, involving demolition of short sections of damaged sidewalk and replacement with new concrete, is out for bid now. The city expects to repair about 30 locations using this removal and replacement method at a cost of around $20,000. Streets affected will include Eatonton, Greene, Frobel, Funderburg, North Warren, College, Forsyth Streets and Post Road. The bottom photo shows a typical repair location. The sidewalk in the photo has settled around the inlet, creating a trip hazard and an impediment to wheel chairs, strollers, etc.
