The Jasper Patriots Tea Party is hosting what it calls a candidate debate on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the large courtroom at the courthouse. A google search of The Jasper County Tea Party found Mary Alice Carter to be the coordinator. The debate is hosted by Skip and Cheryl Nowetner.

The following week, on Thursday, Oct. 18, the Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce and the Jasper County Farm Bureau will co-host a candidate forum, also at 7 p.m. in the Courthouse. It will be held in the small Courtroom unless there are too many people to fit in there.

Candidates that the Tea Party is expecting include Donnie Pope, Greg Sands, and Chalres Ledford, candidates for sheriff; Carl Pennamon, Nancy Baeder, Charles Hill, Bruce Henry, Joan Bell, and Craig Salmon for county commissioner; Billy Norris and Michelle Haddock for coroner, and Burt Jones and Darrell Black for state senate.

The same individuals will be invited to the October 18 forum which will be in the usual format, with questions presented in advance so the moderator can read through them, eliminate duplicates, and be sure they stick to issues.

In addition, on October 18, someone will be there to speak on the proposed constitutional amendment.

Unopposed candidates or those who have sewn up their election are invited to attend to chat with interested persons after the forum.

For the November 6 election, voters will decide on the races named above, as well as the President of the United States and two public service commissioners. Voters will also approve or deny two proposed constitutional amendments.
