Pageant, Gun Season, Festival…It’s All About Deer In the Deer Capital

The opening of firearm season for deer is this Saturday, Oct. 20, and Jasper County will likely see a large influx of hunters as the weekend gets under way.

Many hunters have already been here during bow season and primitive weapons season, but the real deal starts this Saturday.

Here in the Deer Capital we celebrate the deer, working to raise bigger and better and more deer so no one can question our status as Deer Capital.

We celebrate so much, we have a festival, which this year will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3.

And, before the festival, there is a pageant from which a Little Miss Fawn and a Deer Festival Queen are each selected. But, the queen is not named until the actual Deer Festival, and her name will be announced about 3 p.m., just before the parade.

And, the Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce has asked anyone who plans to be in the parade…with a float, walking, juggling, riding a horse or even an elephant, to please register in advance. Forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce office on the Washington Street side of the Square, next to City Hall, and more information is available from Carol Ann McMichael, 706-318-2632.

There may be a few booths left for vendors, but interested persons should contact Lori Gray, 706-468-8994 immediately. The deadline to pre-register for the Deer Dash is tomorrow, Oct. 19, and those forms are available online at www.jaspercountycoc.com or from the COC office on the Square.
