Veterans Are Honored at Various Celebrations

VETERANS GATHER AT SENIOR CENTER OFR SPECIAL BREAKFAST IN THEIR HONOR

The Jasper County Senior Center hosted a Veteran’s Breakfast last Friday for the third consecutive year in an effort to honor our local veterans.

This year, about two dozen veterans turned out for the occasion, along with several other guests. The only elected official present was Rep. Susan Holmes, and Stone Workman was there representing Austin Scott’s office. Army Sgt. Major Billy Connelly was the featured speaker.

The morning began with a welcome by Senior Center Director Authurene Davis, who later posed with members of the American Legion for a photo (see page 2).

Sheriff Charles Roper offered a prayer. After Mr. Connelly’s remarks, the group moved outside to witness a 21-gun salute by Jasper County deputies, then the playing of Taps by Sandra Shockley, a local veteran, and the singing of America the Beautiful by a women’s ensemble.

Veterans present for Friday’s breakfast included Legionnaires Jeff Howe, Dave Levowski, Bob Brill, and Billy Johnson; Ted Colvard, Michelle Rizer-Pool, Bill Goolsby, Mrs. Shockley, John Eckles, Amantae Sands, Betty Maddox, Harrison Thomas, Jr., Rep. Holmes, Vernon Davis, Whichard Standifer, Mr. Connelly, Leonard Davis, Molly Pompey, John Bassett, Howard Osborn, Leonard Davis, Robert Sullivan, Allen Craven, and Joe K. Davis, Sr.

Several people and businesses donated to the center to make the Veteran’s Tribute Breakfast possible. See more photos from Friday, page 2, as well as another tribute.
