’Cane Basketball Teams Open Season with Wins
The Monticello Hurricanes boys basketball team traveled to Jackson High School Saturday to face the Red Devils and earned a win.
“We finally put together four quarters of basketball,” said head coach Ernest Scott.
Qua Thurmond led all scorers with 26 points and 12 rebounds, Quinton Standifer earned 21 points, JaQuavious Standifer 15 points, Deon Epps 10 points, Cordea Dennis three points, Jordan Stone two points and Chris Porter chipped in with one point.
The final score was 81-61 due to a great defensive effort for the team.

The Monticello Lady ’Canes faced GMC at home last Friday and defeated the Bulldogs 60-38.
“The girl’s were excited about the first home game. They played hard on offense as well as on defense. They played together and I was very proud of their effort,” said Head Coach DeDe Davis.
Leading the scoring for the Lady ’Canes were Janee Chapman with 24 points and C.J. Jackson with 14.
Morgan Stokes added 8, Paissley Stewart, Aaliyah Barnes, and Tierra Whitlock, each added 4; and Miata Dudley had 2.
Saturday night the Lady ’Canes won over Jackson 52-29. Stewart was the leading scorer verses Jackson with 17 points, followed by Chapman with 9, Barnes, and Jackson added 8 each, Morgan Stokes had 4, Dudley, 3 and Whitlock 1.
Coach Davis said, “It was a great win. We had several girls to get hurt, but we also had a lot of young players who were forced to step up and they played exceptionally well. We still have things to work on, but the girls are playing hard.”
The next game is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 8, 4 p.m. at GMC in Milledgeville.
