Mat ’Canes Take Second Out of 10-Teams

The ‘Canes went 8-1 as a team in the Hurricane Duals Invitational Tournament last weekend, and had to settle for second place behind Social Circle, with Jones County taking third place.
Individual performances in the tournament included Seniors Oscar Sandoval, wrestling at 182 pounds, and Patrick Clement at 160, taking first place in their weight class.
Freshman Harley Atler at 106, Junior Justin Bradley at 126, Senior Jordan Weaver at 138 and Senior Alex Davis at 195 all placed second.
Senior Victor Bautista at 132, Junior Danny Villanueva at 171 and Freshman Tyler Seawright as a heavyweight all placed third.
Season-to-date Sandoval has a record of 21-0, Clement is 15-1 and Seawright is 16-1.

Head Wrestling Coach Andy Rewis said, “This was a very competitive tournament and overall we wrestled very well. We are still struggling at some weight lineups, but the team is working hard and we are getting better and getting ready for region competition during the last week of January.”
Coach Rewis also expressed his appreciation for the community and school support of the tournament. “We had very good attendance and it was a well run tournament. Members of the community, fans, parents, teachers and the booster club supplied our hospitality room with food and refreshments and ran the concession stand. We also appreciated the support and presence of Principal Robyn Mullis and Superintendent Dr. Mike Newton.”
The team was scheduled to travel to Athens Christian Tuesday, too late to report the results in this edition.
The ‘Canes have a busy weekend scheduled beginning with a trip tomorrow afternoon. Friday, Dec. 14 to Walnut Grove for a match beginning at 5 p.m.
They are also scheduled to travel to Macon this Saturday for a match versus Rutland with action getting under way at 9 a.m.
