Piedmont Basketball Is Back In Action
Piedmont Academy’s varsity basketball teams traveled to Acworth to face Furtah Prep January 4 in region contest. The Lady Cougars recorded a 44-25 victory against the Lady Falcons behind 24 points from senior Hailey Burnham.
Heather Tyler added 8 points in the win while Anna Jones scored 4 and Lucy Strickland finished with 3. Matti Smith and Beth Anne Mahaffey both scored 2 points while Savannah McGinnis added a free throw.
The Lady Cougars fell at home Saturday to Briarwood 58-45. Burnham continued her impressive season with a game-high 26 points. Burnham scored 7 points in the first quarter, 5 in the second, 4 in the third and 10 more in the fourth quarter.
Coach Josh Daher said he was proud of how the Lady Cougars battled against Briarwood. “They are a very good team,” the coach said.
Carley Cain added 7 points for Piedmont and Jones finished with 5 but the points weren’t enough to over visiting Briarwood. Lanie King finished with 3 points while Tyler and Strickland both scored 4.

The Lady Cougars fell to a strong Arlington squad at home Tuesday 75-36. Burnham once again led the team with 14 points followed by 7 by Strickland. Cain added 6 points while Jones scored 4. Kacy Swart and Haley Tyler finished with 2.
The varsity boys, despite 17 points from Logan Partenza, were unable to keep pace with the Falcons in an 87-42 loss. Furtah Prep jumped out to a 28-10 lead after the first quarter and led 52-21 at halftime.
Chandler Burrell was also in double figures for the Cougars with 10 points. Drew Collins finished with 4 points while Zach Beggs scored 3 and Michael Edwards, 2. Nick Dimsdale added a free throw.
The Piedmont boys hosted Briarwood Saturday falling 55-29. Burrell paced the team with 14 points while Collins scored 6. Partenza added 3 points while Zach Wilson, Beggs and Mack Brady each scored 2. “We are still working to get better,” Daher said of the boys. “We hope to be able to upset some people by tournament time.”
The varsity boys fell 65-42 to Arlington Tuesday. Partenza scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Cougars. Collins contributed 9 points.
The Piedmont teams return to the court Friday at LaGrange in region games beginning at 6 p.m. Piedmont will then host Nathanael Greene Saturday with varsity games beginning at 1 p.m.
