Diamond Cougars Begin Play on the Road
The Piedmont Academy varsity baseball team continued its opening week of play Monday with a 12-5 road win against Monsignor Donovan in Athens.
Zach Beggs earned the win as the Cougars improved 3-1 during the early stage of the 2013 season.
Prior to Monday, the Cougars posted a 14-1 victory against Nathanael Greene on the road Saturday. The game was close for the first three innings before Piedmont scored eight runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth inning.

Luke Andrews, Logan Partenza and Jared Smith each worked an inning in relief of Mac Brittain who had a perfect game through 3.2 innings.
“We were very patient at the plate,” Camp said. “When we had good pitches to hit, we took advantage of it. Good teams wait on strikes. We didn’t chase bad pitches which was good to see.”
The Piedmont Academy varsity baseball team also played two games in Macon last Thursday to start the 2013 campaign.
The Cougars fell to Class AAA Mt. de Sales 3-1 before defeating the Middle Georgia Patriots 7-2.
In the game against the Mt. de Sales Cavaliers, the game only lasted four innings asd the coaches agreed to a 90-minute time limit. Camp used the opportunity to get several players game time.
Beggs was 1-for-2 at the plate with a run while Jared Smith was 1-for-2.
The Cougars found a little more success against Middle Georgia in pushing runs across. Camp said his team was patient at the plate and took advantage of 12 walks.
The weather conditions were also tough Thursday for all the teams.
“As cold as it was with the win, our pitchers and defense did a tremendous job,” Camp said. “Our offense is a little behind at this stage, but that is to be expected. The more live pitching we see the better we will get offensively. We took advantage of a few miscues against Middle Georgia.”
Josh Williams delivered a bases clearing double in the win.
McKenzie Brittain, Luke Andrews and Mike Weatherly handling the pitching duties in the tough elements.
“Defensively, we made a couple of mistakes but we made some plays too,” Camp said.
Piedmont will travel to Brentwood Friday for a 4 p.m. contest before traveling to Covenant Monday for a 5 p.m. game. The Cougars open region play Tuesday at Arlington Christian at 4 p.m.
