Piedmont Track Competes at Gatewood

Piedmont Academy’s track athletes were able to compete for the first time this spring as they made the short trek to Gatewood last week.

Heather Tyler won the 1,600-meter run for the Lady Cougars while Emily Hammonds, Abigail Hyde, Amelia Dodson and Heather Tyler combined to finish fourth in the 4×100-meter relay.

For the boys, Logan Partenza was runner-up in the 1,600-meter run while the 4×400-meter relay team of Partenza, Britton Bailey, Barrett Whitaker and Hank Strickland was second.

Strickland was fourth in the 1,600-meter run and fifth in the 800-meter run. Strickland, Gaven Edge, Partenza and Whitaker were third in the 4×100-meter relay.

The event featured several schools including host Gatewood, Piedmont, John Milledge, Briarwood, Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock and Westminster-Augusta.

Piedmont’s track teams will compete at Brentwood in Sandersville Wednesday, March 27.

“It was a good start for our season,” coach Rhett Farmer said. “We turned in some strong performances.”
