TOTAL LOSS

This home at 4948 Hwy. 11 South, in Adgateville, burned down Tuesday morning after a candle turned over and started the fire, and then the house went up in flames, despite the efforts of family members to extinguish the blaze.
Living in the home were Suzeanna Brill and two children. Ms. Brill called 911 at 6:40 a.m., and they were paged out immediately. The first truck was on scene at 6:55 a.m. , for a 14 minute response time. The home was fully involved in flame when the first firefighters arrived. They were able to contain it to the main dwelling.
Apparatus and firefighters from three stations—Station 3, Monticello; Station 4, Hillsboro, and Station 5, Piedmont, responded. In addition, a firefighter from Station 6, North Alcovy responded when more manpower was needed, for a total of seven firefighters responding.
In addition, a Jasper County ambulance responded, and one of the medics was also a firefighter, who helped fight the fire. A new firefighting class will be starting soon. There is no financial cost to participants, but they must give time. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer, which actually offers a pension, should contact Jasper County Fire Chief Jarret Slocumb for details. Call 706-468-4943 if interested.
