Two Players Get 12 Right in Football Contest

With all the upsets last weekend on football fields across the country, it’s no wonder that only two players in The Monticello News football contest got as many as 12 right.
Those two were the winner, Bobby Bailey, and a very close runner-up, Glen Davis.
Both men correctly guessed the winners in 12 of the games listed in last week’s football contest. Mr. Bailey edged out Mr. Davis by being closer on the tie-breaker.
The Piedmont-Dominon game was designated as tie-breaker, and Piedmont won, 27-7, making the total score (tie-breaker) 34 points. Mr. Bailey guessed 42 points would be scored in the game, and Mr. Davis guessed 47.
For his efforts, Mr. Bailey picked up a $25 prize from State Rep. Susan Holmes, sponsor of the week.

Mr. Bailey said he had been playing the football contest “forever,” and it is the first time he has won.
Besides the two who got 12 right, there were only four with 11 right, and five with 10 right. So, out of nearly 150 contest entries, only 11 people got 10 or more right.
Therefore, only two names were added to the grand prize honor roll for a chance at a premium ticket package to the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta.
It was a tough week. We’re hoping this week will be a little easier, so more people can get their names added to the grand prize honor roll. Of course, when there are so many upsets, it’s anybody’s game. Interestingly, less than five players picked the New York Jets to bet the New England Patriots. Several picked Tennessee to beat South Caroina, and more picked Missouri to beat Florida. But, all in all, with Georgia losing to Vandy, and a few other upsets, it was tough to score well this week.
That’s why anyone can play and anyone can win. There’s no guarantee. On any gven day, the underdog may prevail.
The local schools both won last week, region contests, and they’ll be trying to post another win this week. The Bulldogs, who have struggled of late, have an off week to get ready for those Gators. The Atlanta Falcons, that got back on track Sunday, are heading to Arizona Sunday. So, there will be plenty of games to choose from.
And, as last week proved, there’s no sure fire way to win. Unranked teams knock ranked teams off their pedestals sometimes. So, play the game. Pick by the soudn of their name, the weather in the region, or whatever. It would appear there’s no way to truly predict.
Remember, write legibly, include your name and daytime phone number, and submit your entry somehoiw by 5 p.m.. Friday.
This week, one lucky winner will win a prize worth $25 from Town ‘N Country General Store, sponsor of the week. Entry form and complete rules are on page 14.
