‘Canes Lose to Bleckley Co. 54-13

GREAT BLOCKING GIVES JACOB CAVENDER #14 TIME TO PASS

It was a cold rainy night last Friday as the ’Canes faced the Bleckley County Royals and honored all the seniors athletes before kickoff. The ’Canes fought hard and never gave up and took a hard loss to the Royals 54-13.

To begin the first quarter, the ’Canes lost the toss and were forced to receive the ball at the half.

Tremaine Farley was on the first tackle of the game on defense. During the first drive of the game, Walt McMichael and Jordan Stewart were on two great tackles, while Diquan Johnson made the tackle to force the Royals to turn the ball over on downs.

On the ’Canes opening offensive drive, Jacob Cavender connected with Lane Thomas for an 80 yard touchdown making the ’Canes first to get on the scoreboard leading 6-0.

The Royals then ran the kickoff back for 80 yards and scored making the extra point, and taking a 7-6 lead.

After the Royals kicked off, Tra Jackson rushed for 8 yards, but resulted in a ’Cane punt. Wrapping up the first quarter tackles were made by Colton Clay, Jordan Stone, Quincy Standifer, Thomas Deraney, and Jackson who added a sack.

The Royals went on to score two more touchdowns in the first, but Johnson was there to block the extra point field goal ending the first with the ’Canes trailing 20-6.

To begin the second quarter, John Davis ran a strong return for the ’Canes but they ended up turning the ball over on downs.

Deraney added two tackles early in the second, but the Royals added 7 to their score. Cavender completed passes to McMichael and Jackson, but came up just shy of the first down before Cavender completed a first down pass to Farley.

Late in the quarter, the ’Canes ran a halfback pass with Jackson and Thomas who connected for a 24 yard first down.

Following the great ’Cane offense, the Royals scored two more times just before the half, with a 41-6 score.

Early in the third quarter Jackson got multiple carries and rushed for a first down. Cavender followed with a connection to Farley for 8 yards, but the ’Canes turned the ball over once again.

Defensively, Stewart and Standifer each had several tackles early in the quarter for the ’Canes first defensive drive. Later in the quarter, the Royals scored again.

Matthew Lawson received the kickoff and returned the ball for several yards before the ’Canes were forced to turn it over. The third quarter ended with a tackle by Standifer.

In the last quarter of the game, the a’Canes were able to put together a scoring drive which began with Cavender connecting with Deraney, McMichael, and Thomas for the touchdown. The joy was short lived as the Royals scored one last time making it 54-13 final.

The Monticello Hurricanes travel to long time rival Putnam this Friday, Nov. 8 for their last game of the season. Kickoff is a 7:30 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to come out and support the ’Canes.
