Basketball Cougars Fall in Openers

Piedmont Academy’s varsity basketball teams ushered in a new season Tuesday with the Cougars and Lady Cougars falling to visiting Monsignor Donovan of Athens.

The Piedmont girls were led by Remington Marsh’s 10 points but Monsignor Donovan took a 39-22 victory. Anna Jones and Beth Anne Mahaffey both added three points for the Lady Cougars while Bridgette Phillips, Amelia Dodson and MaKennah Holifield all scored two points.

Piedmont got off to a slow start trailing 9-2 after the first quarter and 24-7 at halftime.

For the Piedmont boys, Zach Beggs scored a team high 14 points, but Monsignor Donovan earned a 63-47 win. Will Robinson scored 26 points to lead the visitors.

Chandler Burrell added nine points for the Cougars while Hank Strickland and Mack Brady both finished with five. Zach Mooney and Ty Patterson added two points each.

Piedmont’s varsity teams will return to action Friday when they host Gatewood. The teams will then travel to Nathanael Greene Saturday. Games begin at 6 p.m. both days.
