Mat Cougars Record Wins
Piedmont Academy’s wrestlers got plenty of experience last week hosting a meet and also competing at a two-day event at Westfield School in Perry.
Last Tuesday, the Mat Cougars hosted Loganville Christian Academy, Trinity, Unity and Creekside.
Mills Smith, Payden Cantera and Nolan Cleary were each 2-0 while Ian Boyd, Austin Taylor and Dylan Effird earned wins. Malik Reid and Hunter Burson also competed for the varsity team while Tanner Coppock wrestled for the Middle School.
During the tournament at Westfield last weekend, Coppock was 2-0 and the winner of the Middle School 167-pound division.
The varsity team was 2-2 with wins against Windsor and Mill Springs. Piedmont also wrestled Bulloch and Southland.
Individually, Reid was 4-0 while Cantera was 3-1. Boyd, Taylor, Effird and Cleary also earned two wins.
Smith did not compete due to illness and Burson was battling a shoulder injury, coach Alvin Hawkes said.
“Dyland Efird did a great job competing at a higher weight class,” the coach said. “Malik Reid is to be commended as he did not lose, including a very hard fought 5-1 win against Bulloch. I am proud of how hard all of the wrestlers worked on Friday and Saturday.”
Coppock was also praised for winning his weight class in the Middle School competition.
