Councilmen Are Sworn Into Office
Newly elected Monticello City Councilman David Wease, and returning councilman Larry Thurman were sworn in under oath by Jasper County Probate Judge Linda M. Keller Thursday evening.
The two men took the oath in front of a room full of over 30 onlookers.
The two men swore to the oath of office from the Monticello Charter Section 7, paragraph (b) stating that they will “faithfully enforce the charter and ordinances of said City [Monticello] to the best of my skill and knowledge without fear or favor…”
Mayor Pro tem Bobby Jacobs welcomed everyone to the special swearing in ceremony thanking those in attendance and stating that “this is a special time for us to come together for recognition of those who have come forth to represent the City and the voters.”
He said that working together and being a member of the city council was often tough and thankless.
He said being the face of the people was not always easy but that he believed that the groups of people he works with are there for the city of Monticello, and that “we work hard and pray hard for betterment of the entire community.”

He said “there are not enough opportunities to say ‘thanks’ to those that support the city and us. Thank you for being here, for listening and for caring.”
After the councilmen were sworn, councilman Thurman said that this was his second term and he was thankful for the support he had received. He also said, “my first term wasn’t an easy road to travel but I will continue to do the work I’ve done and move Monticello into the 21st century.”
He finished with “I want to thank all of those that support the city and me. Thank you.”
New councilman Wease said, “I’ve been sitting out there [at meeting in the audience] for about four years and thought I’d do this or that, and it’s been a great learning experience. I’ve got a lot more to learn and I want to thank the citizens for being here and for having me.”
Mr. Wease concluded with “it truly is humbling when that final tally comes in and the selection shows you. I will let God guide me and will look to Him first, and I will strive to do my best for the city.”
The swearing in then concluded with Hillsboro Baptist Church choir signing Prayer for America and the trio of Bobbi Sauls, Anna Parker and Denise Parker singing the hymn It Is Well with My Soul.
Reverend Jim McDuffie, of Hillsboro Baptist Church closed the
ceremony, and refreshments were served.
