Both Hurricane Basketball Squads Seeded #3

The Monticello Hurricane varsity basketball squads entered this week’s 4-AA Region tournament seeded third after completing regular season action last weekend.
The Lady Canes fell Friday with a 42-41 heartbreaking loss in the final seconds to the Putnam County War Eagles. The win gave Putnam the edge in the region standings securing the #2 seed and the site of the second round of tournament play.
The outcome of the final games placed the Lady Canes as the third seed going into the tournament which began Monday with seventh and eighth seeds playing.
The Canes earned a 70-59 victory over the Putnam War Eagles.
The Hurricane squads were scheduled to begin the tournament Wednesday in Putnam. However, expected inclement weather has postponed region action until Friday, Feb. 14. Several school systems in the region cancelled school for Wednesday and today, Feb. 13. Therefore action will resume Friday, Feb. 14 in Putnam.

The #3 Lady Canes are scheduled to play #6 Northeast Macon during second round action. The varsity squad has defeated Northeast twice this season and doing so again would take the Lady Canes into the semi-final round. The girls will play Friday at 2 p.m. in Putnam.
If in the semifinals, the Lady Canes will face the winner of #7 Lamar vs. #8 Crawford vs. #2 Putnam. That scenario could lead to a rematch of Friday’s heartbreaker which the Lady Canes will look to avenge.
On the boys side, the Canes will face #6 Putnam in the second round to be played at 7 p.m. in Putnam. The winner of that competition will play in the semifinals against the #8 Bleckley vs. #7 Macon County winner vs. #2 Taylor County.
A trip to the semifinals would land the Canes in the final region round in Bleckley playing for third place or a region title.
