Weyman Mercer
Weyman Mercer, native resident of Jasper County and Monticello, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. He was born December 13, 1931, to the late Grover Cleveland Mercer and Maude Steadham Mercer.
Mr. Mercer is survived by his wife, Ann Tyler Mercer, to whom he was married for 51 years.
After graduating from Monticello High School in 1950, Mr. Mercer attended Middle Georgia College and the University of Georgia, receiving a bachelor’s degree in 1955. He was a high school athlete and played basketball at Middle Georgia. He worked at Warner Robins Air Force Base in Civil Engineering department and retired in 1987.
Soon after retirement, he began his second career doing maintenance and custodial work at Monticello Baptist Church until 2007.
Mr. Mercer loved playing golf and looked forward to Tuesday and Thursday mornings to be at Hunter Pope with his friends. He was an avid Bulldog fan and always read sports news following carefully what was happening, agonizing losses and celebrating wins.
A member of Monticello Baptist Church since his teenage years, Mr. Mercer served in many capacities including deacon, Chairman of Deacon Board, Sunday School Director, and Sunday School Secretary. He also volunteered many hours doing grounds work.
In addition to his wife Ann, Mr. Mercer is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Bradley Andrew Mercer and Jennifer Bailey Mercer, David Tyler Mercer and Kathy Couch Mercer of Monticello; granddaughters, Krista Mercer, Ella Mercer, and Addyson Mercer; sisters, Ammie Laura Tyler of Monticello and Betty Johnson of Coatesville, Ind.; brother, Walter Tillman of Monticello; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Sisters preceding Mr. Mercer in death are Sara Prosser, Lucille Waits, Doris Gokey and Gladys Batchelor.
The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jordan Funeral Home.
The funeral service is scheduled Saturday, March 1 at 11 a.m. at the Monticello Baptist Church. Interment will be held at a later date at Williams Payne Cemetery. Dr. Robert Whitmire officiated.
