Diamond Cougars Open Season
Piedmont Academy’s varsity baseball team ushered in its new season last week with a 12-3 road loss to Loganville Christian Academy.
The Cougars jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first only to see LCA even the score in the bottom half. Piedmont added one more run in the top of the second inning before LCA responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
“Things started off well but they just knocked it around the park,” Piedmont coach Danny Camp said of his team’s opponent.
“Then, we started to kick it around some. Loganville Christian is a good team. I still think we will be a good team. In the long run, maybe this game will be helpful for us. We need to do a better job of getting runners home when they are in scoring position.”
Offensively, the Cougars were led by a 2-for-4 performance by Luke Andrews Jared Smith, Zach Beggs, Malcom Tyler and Josh Williams also had hits.
Mac Brittain earned the start before giving way to Mike Davis and Tyler.
On Tuesday, Piedmont traveled to John Milledge Academy for another non-region contest. The Cougars defeated the Trojans 6-0 as Davis recorded the win working four innings and striking out four.
Brittain worked one inning while Beggs closed the game out. Piedmont’s pitchers only allowed one hit in the contest.
At the plate. Andrews was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs while Williams, Michael Edwards, Tyler Mills and Zack Wilson also contributed. Mack Brady scored two runs.
Seniors on the 2014 team include Brittain, Tyler, Smith and Jacob Younker. Juniors will be Andrews, Beggs, Williams, Davis and Hunter Knox. Sophomores will be Noah Quick, Alan Powell, Wilson, Hunter Whiting, Nolan Cleary and Mike Weatherly. Freshmen include Wyatt Galloway, Edwards, Mills and Brady.
Piedmont’s varsity team will host Brentwood Friday at 4 p.m. before traveling to Covenant Academy Monday.
The Piedmont B-team squad will face Crown Athletics on the road for a Saturday doubleheader at 2 p.m.
The Middle School Cougars were scheduled to begin play Wednesday at home against Lake Oconee.
