Carrie B. Hill
On March 2, 2014, Mother Carrie B. Hill peacefully began to rest in the arm of our heavenly Father. Her life serves as an exceptional example of love and devotion for God, family and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 8.
The second daughter of Carrie Austin Shy and Thomas Shy, Sr., Mother Carrie was born October 9, 1915. The world made way for a package of cayenne pepper and caramel named Carrie Bell in Morgan County, Ga.
She was educated in the Pleasant Grove community school in Newborn, Ga. where she completed the requirement for high school diploma dated April 22, 1932. Her employment was supply teaching at the Pleasant Grove Community School in Morgan County, Newborn, Georgia.
Mother Carrie obeyed the gospel at an early age and united with Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Newborn, Ga. She was baptized by Reverend B. J. Bentley where she served in the ministries as Assistant Secretary of Sunday School and Sunday school teacher.
Experiencing the greatness of love, Carrie Bell Shy was joined in holy matrimony on April 10, 1938 to Harvey Henry Hill. They began their marriage living in Hampton, Va. They later relocated to Harvey’s hometown in Shady Dale, Ga.
Mother Carrie continued to grow in Christ by uniting with the congregation of Greenwood Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher, a Senior Usher, Secretary of the Mother Ministry, Vice President of Senior Mission and Advisor to Junior Mission and Vice President of the Missionary Society for Jasper, Putnam and Morgan County, meeting every fifth Sunday at various churches.
Mother Carrie was a member of the United Sons and Daughters of Zion Lodge #2. In 1945, she joined Flora Chapter #100 Order of Eastern Star and became a honor life member and held the position of assistant secretary.
One of her best memories of this society is when the sisters would gather on Mondays for one month to aid mothers with newborn and household chores, fellowship, and lift up the name of God our Father and his son Jesus Christ.
Flower gardening, baking, canning, jelly preserving, quilting and reading her favorite book, the Bible was always on her to do list.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Carrie Austin Shy; brothers, Robert Shy, Thomas Shy, Jr., Grady Shy, Sr.; sisters, Katie M. Carroll, Dorothy M. Henderson; husband, Harvey H. Hill, Sr.; son, Harvey H. Hill, Jr.; daughter, Carolyn Demps.
Survivors cherishing her memories include daughters, Edna Hill McMichael (Samuel) and Catherine Hill Mitchell; son, Charles D. Hill, Sr. (Sarah); granddaughters, Thale D. Jackson (Mack), Sonya McMichael, Samnita L. Matthew, Yolonda Hill, Carlisa Demps, Latessa Hill Bayonne (Joseph), and Andreane L. Sanders (Alvin); grandsons, Paul F. Hill, Andre Mitchell (Toya), Samuel McMichael III, Albert Demps, Jr.(Diamond), and Charles D. Hill, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Keith Griggs, Jr. (Etrulia), Brittanie Griggs, Joshua Hardeman, Chunco Hardeman, Chico Hardeman, Jr., Jordan I. Matthew, Kennedi L. Matthew, Jada S. Mitchell, Zion Mitchell, Akeem Demps, Jyah N. McMichael, Titus X. Graves, Erica Lewis, and Rashonda Lewis; great-great-grandchildren, Courtney McCary, Nalani Griggs, Keith Griggs, III, Peyton Bolston, and Zoe Hardeman; very devoted sister-in-law, Mildred Carter Gotel; daughter-in-law, Mary L. Hill; son-in-law, Albert Demps, Sr. and many nieces, nephews, church family and friends.
