Varsity ‘Canes Win Three in a Row

The Monticello Hurricane varsity baseball squad is on a roll defeating region foe Macon County 16-0 Tuesday and downing Lamar and Crawford counties last week.

Tuesday’s shutout of Macon County was more than convincing for the varsity squad while competing in the midst of a six-game region stretch.

With 9 runs in the first inning, 1 in the second, 2 in the third, and 4 in the fourth, the game was called by the fifth.

Thomas Deraney and Tony Shumate shared duties on the mound. Shumate had 3 strikeouts and Deraney had 2 with 7 first pitch strikes.

Offensively it was literally all Monticello.

The 4-3 region victory over Lamar County came with Micheal Wyatt, Jr. on the mound. Pitching all seven innings, he earned 4 strikeouts and 13 first pitch strikes.

With two runs each in the first and third innings that was all the Canes needed for a 5 hit win last Wednesday.

“This was a big win for us. Lamar finished tied for first in the region last year, and is expected to do the same this season,” said Head Coach Chris Jenkins. “Michael Wyatt was outstanding on the mound, and we made the plays defensively, even when things were tight in the last inning.”

“Their pitcher did a good job of keeping us off balance, but our kids had a great approach at the plate, and came up with big hits and bunts when we needed them.”

Thomas Deraney led the team in hitting with 2 RBIs. Walt McMichael had 1 RBIs and 1 walk. He also had 2 QABs along with Aaron Newton.

The Canes seemed to have it all under control, pitching and hitting, Friday with a 6-1 win against Crawford.

Tyler Mote had mound duty earning 3 strikeouts and 16 first pitch strikes.

“This was our most complete game of the year, and it was nice to see us keep the momentum from the Lamar win, as opposed to becoming complacent, “ Jenkins said.

“We received another great pitching performance, this time from Tyler Mote who allowed a single to leadoff the game, then didn’t allow another batter to reach. He only struck out three, which means he made them put the ball in play, and we played errorless ball behind him.”

“Crawford was another team that is expected to make the playoffs, so these two wins put us in a good position as long as we keep playing solid ball.”

The team had 9 hits total with 3 runs earned in the second inning, 1 in the third, and 2 in the fifth.

Josh Disharoom had 3 hits, Justin Bradley and Chase Caron, had 2. Brelan Crowe, Newton, and Lane Thomas each had walks. Newton and Thomas each added 2RBIs to their game statistics Friday.

Disharoom, and Quinton Standifer each had 3 QABs.
