Early Voting Has Begun

Early voting began Monday, April 28, and continues through Friday, May 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily in the registrar’s office on the ground floor of the Jasper County Courthouse.

In addition, the registrar’s office will be open on Saturday, May 10, from 9 a m. to 4 p.m. for people who want to vote early for the May 20 primary.

Those who do not vote before then can vote from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20. Those who wait until election day to vote are reminded that several precincts have been eliminated.

Everyone will vote in either Monticello, Martin & Burney or Wyatt precincts.

Whether a voter chooses a Republican or Democratic ballot, they will also be able to vote on non-partisan races, none of which are contested, and the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. Revenue from the ELOST will be used to pay off bonds purchased to build the high school and the preschool buildings, and make improvements to several areas, including Jasper County Primary School.

Both Republican and Democratic ballots have a selection of candidates for U.S. Senate to replace Saxby Chambliss who is not seeking re-election.

Locally, the most hotly contested race is on the Republican ballot, and it is that of U.S. Rep. for the 10th Congressional District to replace Paul Broun who is seeking the Senate seat. Only one Democrat is running, but seven Republicans are running. They squared off in a debate here a couple weeks ago.

Secretary of State Brian Kemp tells voters that they can access all the information the need before going to voting by visiting http://www.mvp.sos.ga.gov.

The “My Voter Page” (MVP) app is a great free resource for voting information. Georgia voters can view their specific sample ballot, find their polling locations, check voter registration status and track the status of their absentee ballot.

All of this information is available on mobile devices on Apple and Android platforms. To download the app search for “GA Votes” in the app store.

Kemp launched the MVP app on March 31 at a combined meeting of the Georgia Election Officials Association/Voter Registrars Association of Georgia in Augusta, GA with election leaders from across the state. It is believed that Georgia is the first state in the nation to offer both online registration as well as an innovative mobile application that enables voter registration like “MVP”.
