Cougars Play in All-Star Game

Piedmont Academy’s three seniors from the 2014 state championship baseball team were able to put their uniforms on one more time this past weekend as they competed in the GISA All-Star contest at Mercer University in Macon.

Mac Brittain, Malcom Tyler and Jared Smith each competed for the Class A/AA team against a team of All-Stars from Class AAA. The squads played one 10-inning game with AAA winning 10-8.

Brittain was the designated hitter in the contest with Tyler at first base and Smith at second. Coach Danny Camp said all three saw plenty of action.

“In that environment, it was more laid back,” Camp said. “You are playing with people you have competed against in the past. All three had smiles on their faces. It was great listening to the introductions when it announced Piedmont Academy as region and state champion. Coach (Daniel) Funt and I enjoyed watching them.”

The game was back and forth, typical of All-Star contests, with the A/AA team leading by as many as four runs at one point before the AAA team rallied.

Brittain, Tyler and Smith were among 12 Piedmont players named to the All-Region team for 2014. Also making All-Region were Zach Beggs, Hunter Knox, Josh Williams, Luke Andrews, Mike Davis, Noah Quick, Mack Brady, Michael Edwards and Tyler Mills.

Williams, Beggs, Brittain and Andrews were also name All-State.

Camp said the team banquet has been set for Sunday, July 27.
