Baseball ‘Canes Awards Are Presented
Several Monticello Hurricane varsity and junior varsity baseball players were recognized for special honors recently at the annual baseball banquet held at Jasper County High School.
Senior Chase Caron earned the “Pride of the Hurricane” award for being an outstanding player, student and young man all four years of high school. Freshman Josh Dish-aroon received the “Most Indispensable” player after coming up from junior varsity in mid-season to serve as catcher for the remainder of the varsity season.
In addition to the special awards, Athletic Director and Baseball Coach Chris Jenkins presented senior plaques to Mr. Caron and other seniors Justin Bradley, Aaron Newton and Dustin Womack. Each plaque outlined all of the seniors’ individual and team athletic accomplishments during the four years of high school.
Coach Jenkins commented that these seniors have played a vital role in the baseball program over the past four years and that the team would miss them tremendously.
The remainder of the varsity team members received their varsity letter and members of the junior varsity team earned participation awards.
Junior baseball players Walt McMichael (right photo, left) and Tyler Mote were named to the 4AA All-Region Team as shortstop and pitcher, respectively, at the annual baseball awards banquet as well.
The Hurricane team members were chosen to represent the region by the varsity baseball coaches in Region 4AA at a recent coaches meeting, according to Coach Jenkins.
Mr. McMichael is a three-year starter at short-stop for the Hurricanes, coming to the mound occasionally. Mr. Mote transferred to JCHS his sophomore year where he began pitching for the Hurricanes and has continued to have success on the mound.
Both young men are strong players for the Hurricanes, according to Coach Jenkins, who said he is thankful to have them both coming back for their senior year.
