VETERANS APPRECIATION DAY

The second annual Veteran’s Appreciation Day, sponsored by American Legion Post 110 was held in Monticello Saturday, complete with flag raising, flag retirement, a parade, speakers, politicians, a special visit from Miss Georgia Tiana Griggs of Monticello, and, of course, veterans. This year the emphasis was on the female veterans and World War II vets.
In the top photo, female veteran Sgt. Sandra Shockley of the U.S. Air Force plays Taps during the flag retirement ceremony which ended the day. Veterans (bottom photo, left, left to right) Theron Edwards and Allen Craven were recognized, as were (not pictured) female veterans, Sgt. Shockley, 94-year-old Sgt. Dorothy Pollack who served in the Marines during World War II, Donna Benise, Airman First Class, who took part in the Hungarian AirLift, and Sgt. Mollie Pompey. Several people spoke to honor the veterans, and Cissy Benton, executive director of the Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce led the group in singing God Bless America.
Also, Miss Georgia (bottom photo, right) posed for photos throughout the day such as the one with Mayor Bryan Standifer and State Rep. Susan Holmes, and two young ladies above. The Legion plans to continue the festivities every year. After the festivities on the Square, Miss Georgia was treated to lunch at the Stars & Stripes Restaurant and Bar on Venture Court.
