‘Canes Win Second Scrimmage, 28-26
In spite of the heat conditions last Friday, the Hurricanes came out ready to play and recorded another pre-season victory, 28-26, against Cross Creek of Augusta. It was the second scrimmage and win for the Canes who will play their season opener tomorrow, August 29 at Walnut Grove.
To begin the first quarter, Thomas Deraney (#10) threw a first down pass to Walt McMichael (#2). A couple plays later, Jay Johnson (#3) got a toss from Deraney and took it 55 yards for the Canes first score of the evening. Bryce Crawford (#64) made his first extra point field goal of the game giving the Canes a 7-0 lead three minutes into play.
About half way through the quarter, the Canes were on defense and Jordan Stone (#12) picked up a fumble recovery from a Garrison Williams (#11) sack, which gave them the ball back. A few plays later Stone helped the Canes claim their second touchdown of the night making it 14-0 following another extra point kick from Crawford.
Cross Creek scored its first touchdown of the game after a long run by the quarterback to take it to 14-7 at the end of the first.
The teams were consistently going back and forth in the second quarter. With eight minutes ‘til the half, Lane Thomas (#7) picked up a Canes forced fumble giving the team the ball and perfect scoring position. Deraney threw a perfect pass to receiver Thomas for a 48-yard touchdown pass. The Canes were in control, 21-7, at the half.
In the second half, the Razorbacks slowly started making a comeback, but the Canes managed to hang on. With about two minutes in the third, Matthew Lawson (#1) intercepted a pass, giving the Canes back the ball.
Unfortunately, the Canes turned the ball over again resulting in a Razorback touchdown and a score of 21-14.
Later in the half Stone was at it again, this time for a 70-yard touchdown run, which gave the Canes their final score of the evening. In the middle of the fourth, Cross Creek scored its final touchdown and attempted to tie the game up by attempting a two- point conversion.
However freshmen defensive linemen Devin Robinson (#73) was there for the stop which helped the Canes get their second win of the season, 28-26.
Head coach Doug Huff said, “We played a good game, however we made too many mistakes. The biggest thing that we have to work on is our execution on both sides of the ball and do a better job making tackles on defense and limiting penalties. But our O-line is coming together and our backs are doing well also. Overall I was pleased with the effort and it was great to get a win.”
Hurricane fans should come out and support the team in their season opener at Walnut Grove tomorrow, August 29 for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off.
Go Canes!
