MS ‘Canes Begin Season

The Middle School Hurricane football squad will open its season this week at Social Circle following a 7-0 loss to Malcom Bridge during last week’s scrimmage.

Middle school head coach Yelburton Frazier said that although the goal is to win when the team takes the field, he was pleased with the young team’s performance given the limited amount of time to practice and the freshness of the team.

With only a few returning players from last year’s squad and a newly configured coaching staff with the exception of Coach Frazier, the young squad is picking up momentum.

“The young men are picking up on what we’re trying to teach them,” said the head coach. “They are quick learners. We have only had four weeks of practice and two of those included conditioning.”

Impressed with the team’s defensive efforts last week against Malcom Bridge, the coach hopes to continue with the discipline the young squad displayed with not committing a lot of penalties or turnovers.

Currently, the team runs a 4-3 defensive formation and an Power I offense and will incorporate some high school offensive plays in order to prepare the middle school for future play.

Coach Frazier noted that the team is still working on combinations and positions at this point, so fans shouldn’t be surprised if the player they’re rooting for has an eventual change of position or jersey number for that matter.

Following this week’s opener which was scheduled for Wednesday at Social Circle, the middle school team will travel to Morgan Middle School next Wednesday, Sept. 10 for a 4:30 p.m. kick-off.

The team will host its first home game against Putnam Middle School on September 17.

Fans are urged to come out and support the young team.
