Jenifer Kirksey Wins Contest

SABRINA CAGLE PRESENTS CHECK TO JUD KIRKSEY

Well, it’s official! Football season is under way and we have our first winner for The Monticello News football contest…and it happens to be the same winner who won the first week last year.

Jenifer Kirksey had a perfect score, correctly guessing the winners of all 15 games listed in last week’s paper. For her effort, Mrs. Kirksey picked up a $25 prize from the Bank of Monticello, sponsor of the week. Mrs. Kirksey’s husband, Jud, did the honors for her, collecting the check from Sabrina Cagle at the bank.

Mrs. Kirksey outdistanced more than 125 other players, with no players having as many as 14 right, and only four having 13 right. All four players who got 13 right missed on Monticello’s loss to Walnut Grove, 17-13.

After that, it got a little better, with 15 players getting 12 right, making the total to make the honor roll this first week 20.

Mrs. Kirksey may have to begin a new habit. A veteran player, she typically faxes her entry in late afternoon Friday. Last week she sent it in about lunch time…and it proved lucky, indeed.

This week’s contest may prove even more interesting as the pros begin play, so the contest is a mix of high school, college and professional football games.

The contest is on page 10 of today’s paper.

Every time a player correctly guesses the winner in 12 or more games listed in that week’s paper, his or her name is added to the grand prize honor roll. At the end of the contest, all the names will be put in a hat (or cookie jar), and those with multiple entries get their names in each time they made the honor roll. One name is drawn for the grand prize of four tickets to the Chick-fil-A/Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

Now that the Chick-Fil-A Bowl is part of the college bowl playoff system, it is an even bigger game than in the past.

No special skill is required to play; there are surprises every week. So, novice or experienced player, take a look at the games and predict who the winner will be. Then, enter a tie-breaker score (total points scored in the game) in the box and submit your entry.

They may be faxed to 706-468-6576 or brought in person to The News office, 237 West Washington St., Monticello. We must receive each entry by 5 p.m. on Friday for it to be graded. Please write legibly.
