Lady Cougars Earn Key Win

The Piedmont Academy softball team simply needed a region win Tuesday against Flint River Academy on the road.

When all was said and done, the Lady Cougars got that victory holding off the Lady Wildcats 8-7.

“I am very proud of the effort the girls showed,” said coach Daniel Funt. “We have Oak Mountain yet to play in the region. We have to show up against them and give ourselves a chance. I am just very proud of the grit and determination by our team.”

Tuesday’s win avenged an earlier 9-7 loss to Flint River this season.

Piedmont also defeated LaGrange Academy 10-0 in Region 1-AA action last Thursday on the road.

Piedmont used a seven-run sixth inning to break open what had been a close game through the first five innings. Haley Tyler and Morgan Tillman both had a two run double while Matti Smith and MaKennah Holifield both drove in runs. Smith also had an RBI single in the top of the third.

O’Neil Sealy earned the win allowing no runs, four hits and striking out three batters.

“We got off to a slow start,” Funt said. “We were able to break through in the top of the sixth inning. Pitching and defense did well making plays. I was excited to see that. The team has been gritty all year and I know they are capable of continuing to win our remaining region games. They just have to go out and do it.”

The Lady Cougars will travel to Briarwood in a non region game today, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m. before hosting a region doubleheader Monday, Sept. 29, against Oak Mountain beginning at 4 p.m
