Lady Cougars Sweep Oak Mountain

Piedmont Academy’s varsity softball team swept visiting Oak Mountain in a home region doubleheader Monday 12-0 and 15-0.

“We pitched well and played solid defense,” said coach Daniel Funt. “I was proud of O’Neil Sealy’s effort pitching because the conditions were very tough. It was misty and wet the whole time and I know that is extremely tough to deal with when you are pitching.”

Sealy had six strikeouts in the first game Monday afternoon.

In the first game, the Lady Cougars scored six runs in the first and second innings to help end the game after three and a half innings.

Sealy helped her own cause with a three-run double and Remington Marsh had an RBI triple. Amelia Dodson, Haley Tyler and Kylie Garner helped lead the offense.

In the nightcap, Piedmont exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the first and then added two more in the second inning to make quick work of Oak Mountain. Sealy once again earned the win and had three strikeouts.

Tyler and Sealy both had two hits in the second game while Garner, Taylor Swart, Cheyenne Galloway and Morgan Tillman also contributed offensively.

“Offensively, we were patient when we needed to be,” Funt said. “We were also aggressive on the bases. I’m excited for the team and they are really excited. We just have to continue to believe we can do anything. That is what we have been talking about all year.”

Piedmont also defeated Briarwood 12-3 last Thurstay in non-region action on the road.

Tyler, Galloway and Ashley Johnston helped lead the offense. Tillman connected for a two-run homer.

Briarwood held a 3-2 lead after the third inning but Piedmont would tie the game in the fourth and then take he lead in the fifth inning with two runs. The Lady Cougars then exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Sealy went the distance, earning the win.

“The game with Briarwood was important because we were able to keep on progressing, especially offensively,” Funt said. “We had several extra base hits and did a better job of laying off band pitched. We did have some mistakes defensively, but we were able to overcome them.”

The coach credited Sealy for a solid outing.

“O’Neil did a great job on the mound throwing strikes and executing pitches,” Funt said.

Piedmont was set for Senior Night Wednesday against Gatewood. The Lady Cougars will also play today, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. against Flint River in a tie-breaker game for the region title. The game will be played at Gordon College.
