Beginner Wins Football Contest

Perhaps it was beginner’s luck…or he has a great handle on football, but either way, Wayne “Pork Chop” Richardson played The Monticello News football contest for the first time last week and he was the only player to correctly guess the winner of as many as 14 games listed in last week’s contest.
The next best players got 12 right, and there were 16 of them. The only game Mr. Richardson missed on was Piedmont’s 31-21 win over Briarwood.
For his effort he picked up a $25 prize from David Leach at Monticello Drugs, sponsor of the week. Mr. Leach was sporting his orange tie for his alma mater, Tennessee, which lost at the hands of Florida, 10-9.
It was a good week for most of the home folks with Monticello, Piedmont, Georgia and Georgia Tech all winning, but here were several upsets that threw some players out of contention.
Mr. Richardson was among the minority to choose Ole Miss to beat perennial powerhouse Alabama. He was urged to play by his friend Ervin Fulton, who was already on the honor roll. Mr. Richardson and the 16 players who got 12 right all have their names added to the grand prize honor roll for a chance to win a prize package to the Chick-fil-A/Peach Bowl.
This week novice players and regulars again have a chance to play and win the weekly football contest. Whoever wins this will pick up a $25 prize from Town ‘N Country General Store, sponsor of the week.
Anyone can play; anyone can win. But, to participate, entries must be submitted to The Monticello News no later than 5 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 10. They can be brought in to 237 West Washington Street or faxed to 706-468-6576. Please write legibly.
