Tie-Breaker Makes the Difference

RICK RINGER (R) AT LARRY’S 4-WAY PRESENTS PRIZE TO STONE WORKMAN

The Monticello News football contest is known to go far and wide…with people who have moved from here calling family and friends to still take part in the weekly contest.

A common occurrence is among college students who played in high school and want to continue. And, when away at college, you influence others. Such is the case of Monticelloan Phillips Workman, a senior at Clemson University. His roommate Matt Byrd didn’t want to be left out of the fun when Phillips called his dad, Stone Workman each Thursday to get the contests and pick the winners, so he started playing too.

The senior Mr. Workman says it assures him he will talk to his son at least once each week. He also wondered what’s the farthest away a winner of the contest has resided. We don’t keep records like that, so we don’t know.

But this week, Matt Byrd, roommate of the younger Mr. Workman is the winner of the contest, and he had Phillips’ dad pick up the prize for him. Stone collected a $25 prize from Rick Ringer at Larry’s 4-Way, sponsor of the week.

Mr. Byrd, and four others, correctly guessed the winner in 12 of the games listed in last week’s contest. And, he guessed the highest tie-breaker of anyone with 12 right. He guessed 50 points would be scored in Monticello’s 54-37 win over Northeast Macon.

Everyone else who had 12 right guessed a lower tie-breaker.

They include Wayne Rye, Gavin Williams, J. Matt Tumlin, and Jordan Stewart. They will have their names added to the honor roll for the grand prize to the Chick-fil-A/Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

If you’re not yet on the honor roll, or want another opportunity, this week’s contests offers that chance. It includes an assortment of high school, college, and professional contests. Anyone can play; anyone can win. See contest and complete rules on page 13 of the print edition. Remember to get your entry in by 5 p.m. tomorrow.
