Sheriff’s Office Investigates Armed Robbery

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office has had a busy week, investigating a shooting after a basketball game at Jasper County High School on Saturday, and an armed robbery at the A-1 Food Store on Forsyth Street Monday night.

Two of three suspects in the armed robbery were taken into custody by Tuesday afternoon, and a third was still at-large.

Jarvis Carter, 24, and Justin Parks, 19, both of Monticello, were arrested and each charged with armed robbery. Mr. Parks’ residence was searched before his arrest.

An undisclosed amount of cash and a cell phone were taken in the robbery.

A worker at the store said there was surveillance footage of the robbery, however the sheriff’s office would not confirm how suspects were identified and located.

Sheriff Donnie Pope said the shooting is an ongoing investigation, and could only confirm that shots were fired into a vehicle Saturday, and that no one was injured. The shooting did not occur at the high school, he said.

Also, after a preliminary report from the state crime lab, it has been determined that Tommy Jackson, whose body was discovered last week when a fire broke out at a residence on Oak Street, died of natural causes, according to Joe Wooten with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. No foul play was indicated, said Mr. Wooten.

In addition, to those cases, the sheriff’s office investigated numerous other incidents, including several reports of burglary.

On the west end of the county, a resident reported a Polaris ATV with a value of $20,000, taken from the carport of the residence.

Also on the west end, two burglaries were reported on Blue Heron Drive. One was at the Alcovy Shores Water Authority office, but the report did not indicate what was taken. A resident down the street reported a chain saw and fishing poles were taken.

On the other end of the county, Hwy. 16 east, a resident reported the theft of several tools. Deputies were called to the high school on Friday evening with a report of a stolen cell phone. A resident near town reported the theft of prescription drugs, and another resident reported financial transaction card theft. All those cases are under investigation.
