‘Canes Host Duals and Place Third

The Monticello High School Hurricanes wrestling team hosted a Duals Tournament this weekend.

The Mat Canes hosted seven teams and earned third overall behind Southwest High School of Macon and Salem High School of Conyers.

In addition to placing third overall, six individuals earned placements with three winning their weight class.

Taking their weight classes were Noah Faubli in the 106 class, Tyler Seawright in the 220 class, and Chris Anglin in the 285 class. Payton Harwood finished second in the 152 class, Jacob Bowers finished third in the 120 class, and Jacob Hoosier finished third in the 160 class.

Coach Andy Rewis has expressed pride in the team week after week as they continue to improve. While the team does well at matches one factor that hurts the team in scoring is that they don’t have guys competing in all the weight classes, according to the coach.

Prior to this weekend’s tournament, the Mat Canes split action last Wednesday while hosting Monroe County and Jones County. The team beat Monre 48-34 but fell to Jones 30-38.

The Mat Canes were to host Alumni Night Wednesday while taking on Baldwin and Jones again. With the wrestling team being just six years in creation, Coach Rewis said alumni night usually yields 12-15 alumni wrestlers who come back.

The Mat Canes will travel to Fitzgerald Friday and Saturday, Dec. 19-20 for an invitational meet and then take a week hiatus until after the holiday.
