Quincy Standifer was presented the Golden Helmet Award for the Monticello Hurricanes at the annual football awards banquet held last week at Jasper County High School, with Justin Smith being named the most outstanding junior varsity player.

Other awards were presented to: Jordan Stone, most outstanding offensive skill; Chris Anglin, most outstanding offensive lineman; Thomas Deraney, most outstanding offensive player; Xavier Gude, most outstanding defensive skill; Jordan Stewart, most outstanding defensive lineman; Garrison Williams, most outstanding defensive player; Walt McMichael, coach’s award; Stephen Arena, academic award; and Brandi McMichael, the purple heart award.

Summer weight-lifting awards were presented to Jack Johnston, ninth grade; Jay Johnson and Glendon Graybill, tenth grade; Thomas Deraney, Justin Smith and Jamari Myrick, eleventh grade; and Xavier Gude, twelfth grade. Several all-region awards were also presented.

All of the football players, water girls and statisticians who finished the season were awarded varsity letters, and the managers received certificates of participation.

Head football coach Doug Huff began the awards portion of the banquet with words of appreciation to all those who had helped before and during the football season. He then introduced the coaching staff and recapped each of the games that led up to the first state playoff appearance in a number of years.

Coach Huff expressed specific appreciation to the parents of the young men and women who participate in the football program, and then thanked those young men and women for their dedication to the program. He shared how much the seniors would be missed and encouraged the underclassmen to stay actively involved in the athletic programs at the school until football begins again in the spring.

The football banquet is sponsored each year by the Hurricane Football Boosters.
