MS Canes Ready for League Play

The Middle School Hurricane basketball squads were to wrap up their regular Piedmont Athletic Conference (PAC) games Wednesday at Putnam.

The teams are headed into conference league action on Saturday, Jan. 31 to be conducted at Putnam County Middle School.

Both squads have had a successful season by any standard. The boys were undefeated heading into Wednesday’s game with their last loss coming during last year’s conference title game where they earned the runner-up trophy. The young Canes and Coach Rufus Whitlock are looking for redemption this season.

Both teams took out Morgan County last Wednesday and traveled to Carver Middle School last Friday for a tough competition.

The boys prevailed 65-62 but the girls faltered 51-36.

The girls squad, coached by Shakeirra Middlebrooks, has only lost four times this season and looks to challenge for a final spot.

The league tournament, hosted by Jasper County Middle School at the high school last year, will be held at Putnam Middle School over the next week beginning with Super Saturday this weekend.

The girls semifinals will be played Tuesday, Feb. 3 and the boys semifinal on Wednesday, Feb. 4 with the championship games played on Saturday, Feb. 8 beginning at 1 p.m. with the girls.
