Varsity ‘Canes To Compete at State

Both Hurricane varsity basketball ball squads will compete at state competition beginning Tuesday, Feb. 17 regardless of how each team finishes this weekend’s final rounds of region comeptition in Crawford County.

The Lady Canes, seeded #4 entering the competition, sealed their trip to state with a 50-35 win over Northeast Tuesday at home. By virtue of that win, the Lady Canes are set to face #1 seed Putnam County in the second round of region.

The Lady Canes and Lady War Eagles who faced off last Friday to close the regular season will meet once again this Friday, Feb. 13 in a 7 p.m. matchup at Crawford County High School.

Lady Cane Head Coach Tamika Thomas expressed excitement about the chance to be able to play at state but noted that the squad had some region action to tackle first.

Against Northeast, Maya Stokes scored 16 points; Morgan Stokes added 13; Sheridan Tripp, 9.

If the ladies defeat Putnam Friday they will compete the region title Saturday night, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.. If they lose Friday they will play Saturday at 4 p.m.in the matchup to determine third and fourth place seeds for state competition.

In last week’s 46-38 loss to Putnam, Tripp was the high scorer with 10 points. Maya scored 7 and Morgan scored 6.

The varsity Canes will begin their region competition tomorrow against Lamar County at 5:30 p.m. in Crawford County. The boys received a first round bye as a #2 seed.

Head Coach B.J. Thomas and his squad look to be ready for action as the team defeated Putnam last Friday on the road. The win gives the team confidence and momentum headed into this weeekend’s action.

A win Friday against Lamar would send them to the championship game Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in all likelihood against host and undefeated region leader Crawford. A Friday loss would have them playing at 5:30 p.m. Saturday for the third or fourth seed headed into state.

Times and locations for state playoffs have yet to be determined. For information regarding Hurricane state playoff times and sites contact the high school at 706-468-5016 at the conclusion of the region tournament.
