Cougars Eye Region Tourney

The Piedmont Academy varsity basketball teams are just about ready to enter the region tournament.

Both the Cougars and Lady Cougars will close out the regular season Friday when they host Windsor Academy beginning at 6 p.m.

The region tournament will begin Monday, Feb. 16, at Brentwood in Sandersville although the complete brackets have not yet been determined.

The Piedmont varsity boys are currently 8-13 overall (3-4 in Region 4-AA) while the Lady Cougars are 3-18 (1-6 in region play).

Piedmont’s varsity teams hosted Briarwood Academy in region play last Friday with the Lady Cougars falling 38-29. Cheyenne Galloway and Remington Marsh led the team with nine points followed by Amelia Dodson with seven and Haley Tyler with four.

The Piedmont boys earned a needed region win against Briarwood 54-45. Zach Beggs scored a game-high 22 points, including five 3-pointers. Chandler Burrell also finished in double figures with 10.

Jeremiah Dave also had a quality performance with nine points while Chris Cain and Michael Edwards both scored four. Zach Wilson and Chris McClain both finished with two points.

The following day the varsity teams traveled to Gatewood in Eatonton. The Lady Cougars fell 59-14 while the boys were defeated 69-56.

In the girls game, Piedmont struggled offensively with Marsh finishing as the leading scorer with five points. Madison Sanders added four while Dodson scored three.

The boys game was more competitive as Burrell scored a game-high 25 points and Beggs added 11 points. Gatewood led by only two points at halftime and eight after the third quarter.

Wilson scored 10 points while Mack Brady added seven points.

During Tuesday’s road region games at Brentwood, the Lady Cougars were defeated 63-22 while the boys fell 53-50 in overtime.

Piedmont and Brentwood were tied at 48 at the end of the regulation before the host Eagles outscored the Cougars 5-2 in overtime. Beggs paced Piedmont with 15 points while Burrell scored 12 and Wilson scored nine. Edwards and Mack Brady both scored six.

Marsh led the Lady Cougars with nine points, all from 3-point range. Madison McCart finished with five.
