Basketball Cougars Finish Regular Season
The Piedmont Academy Lady Cougars basketball team defeated Windsor Academy 46-43 Tuesday in the Region 4-AA tournament in Sandersville.
Remington Marsh scored a game-high 18 points while teammate Amelia Dodson added 17 as the Piedmont girls won another close game against the Lady Knights. Three of Marsh’s baskets were from 3-point range while Dodson made five of her points from the foul line.
The Lady Cougars are now 3-0 against Windsor for the 2014-2015 season with the largest margin of victory by seven points.
Piedmont led 11-8 after the first quarter Tuesday but had stretched its lead to 22-11 by halftime. The Lady Cougars continued to lead 34-20 after the third quarter but Windsor went on a 23-12 run in the final eight minutes to make the final score much closer.
Cheyenne Galloway added four points for Piedmont while MaKennah Holifield, Matti Smith and Madison McCart all scored two. Haley Tyler added a free throw in the third quarter.
The Lady Cougars guaranteed themselves a spot in the upcoming state tournament with the win. The region tournament continues this week at Brentwood.
Prior to the start of the Region 4-AA tournament this week, the Piedmont Academy varsity basketball teams wrapped up the regular season with home region games against Windsor.
The Lady Cougars, led by 16 points by Dodson, defeated the Lady Knights 50-44 last Friday. The game was close throughout with Piedmont leading by three points after the first quarter and Windsor holding a one-point advantage at halftime. The Lady Cougars had moved back in front by two points after the third quarter (27-25.)
Tyler, Marsh and Galloway all finished in double figures with 10 points. Madison Burnham and McCart both scored two points.
The varsity boys were involved in another high-scoring contest with Windsor. This time the Knights took a 92-72 win despite 22 points by Zach Wilson and 20 points by Chandler Burrell. Wilson scored eight points in the first quarter. Held scoreless in the first eight minutes, Burrell totaled 11 in the second quarter.
