Baseball ‘Canes Drop Opener

The Monticello Hurricane varsity baseball squad fell to Georgia Military College Preparatory School (GMC) 2-0 last Friday in its season opener on the road.

“We played well defensively, had one mental mistake that cost us a run,” said head coach Chris Jenkins of his team’s first season foray.

“We didn’t swing the bats well at all. We took too many good pitches, and hit the bottom half of the ball too many times. But you would rather make those mistakes in the first game of the season, as opposed to the twentieth. We’ll adjust and be fine.”

Tyler Mote was on the mound and pitched six innings. He earned 18 first pitch strikes and three strikeouts. Matthew Lawson had a hit with two quality at bats (QAB) and Brelan Crowe had a walk.

The squad was scheduled to face Jackson on the road Tuesday but the match was rained out. If inclement weather does not persist, the team will travel to Social Circle today, Feb. 26 for a 5 p.m. game and to Gray next Thursday, March 5 to face off against the Jones County Greyhounds.
