Canes Beat Northeast, 16-0

The Hurricane varsity baseball squad earned a huge win in just three innings Tuesday when the boys traveled to Northeast High School in Macon for their first region competition of the season.

Off to a quick pace, the Canes earned 6 runs in the first inning, another 9 runs in the second, and 1 in the third—that was the game. Northeast was scoreless and only managed a single hit.

Cain Gonzales was on the mound earning 6 strikeouts and 7 first pitch strikes. He also had 2 hits, 1 walk, 3 runs batted in (RBIs), and 3 quality at bats (QABs).

Brelan Crowe earned 3 hits, 3 RBIs, and 3 QABs; Matthew Lawson had 2 hits; Quinton Standifer had 1 walk; Chad Cain had 2 RBIs; and Garrett Scroggs had 3 QABs.

“We finally started hitting hard on a line, and hard ground balls, as opposed to the fly balls and pop-ups that plagued us the first couple of games. Hopefully we can continue that, especially with the stretch of games we have coming up,” said varsity baseball head coach Chris Jenkins.

The varsity baseball squad defeated Bowdon 8-5 last Saturday. Tyler Mote had mound duties pitching all seven innings earning 3 strikeouts and 19 first pitch strikes. Mote also had 2 hits, 3 RBIs and 3 QABs.

Josh Disharoon had 2 hits; Stephen Arena and Lawson each had a walk; Braden Lynch had 2 RBIs and Standifer had a RBI.

The Canes got off to a quick start earning five runs in the first inning and two more in the second while holding their opponent scoreless. The fourth inning added another score for the Canes while Bowdon had a four run spree.

The squad also took on Mary Persons Saturday in a doubleheader but came up short. Tyler Seawright took the loss on the mound. Lawson was 2-3 in hits, but we couldn’t put anything together, offensively, as a team, said Coach Jenkins.

The Diamond Canes also took on Social Circle last Friday winning 6-2. Tony Shumate threw a complete game for the win, allowing 1 earned run. Michael Wyatt and Mote led the offense, and also made a couple of nice defensive plays.

“Overall, we played solid ball in the three games. We made a couple of mistakes that cost us runs against Social Circle and Bowdon, but for the most part we played great defense, which we are going to have to do to be successful this season,” said Coach Jenkins.

“We still didn’t hit the ball like we’re capable of, but did the little things (bunts, hit and runs, etc.) that it takes to win close games.”

The varsity squad was slated to play Monroe Area Wednesday and will host Social Circle tomorrow, March 13 at 5 p.m. before traveling to region foe Putnam Tuesday, March 17 for a 5 p.m. matchup.
