Cheyenne Galloway Is County STAR

J. JORDAN, B. GALLOWAY, C. GALLOWAY, M. EL-JOURBAGY (L-R)

Cheyenne Galloway, a senior at Piedmont Academy, was named the county’s STAR student at an awards luncheon Monday, sponsored locally by the Monticello Kiwanis Club.

Miss Galloway chose her mother and long time teacher Beth Galloway as her STAR teacher.

Also honored at the luncheon was Taylor Edwards, Jasper County High School’s STAR student, and her STAR teacher, Chris Savage.

Each young lady was chosen as STAR student for her school, based on having the highest SAT score on a single test date of the three-part SAT taken through the November test date of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program was begun in 1958 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, and has honored nearly 25,000 high school seniors who have in turn chosen their STAR Teachers to share in this recognition. Every accredited high school in Georgia is eligible to participate in this preeminent student/teacher academic recognition.

Miss Galloway will now compete at the district level, and should she win that, she would go on to compete at the state level.

Jasperite Jimmy Jordan, who works with Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), the statewide sponsor of the STAR program, was in his home county of Monticello to make the award presentations to the young ladies and their teachers.

Jeff Beggs, athletic director and assistant headmaster at Piedmont Academy, was the guest speaker for the program. Mr. Beggs said it is a real treat to be at Piedmont Academy, and that it is ine of the most positive environments that he’s ever seen. He said his goal is to help students and teachers be successful. He shared an old coaching adage he was taught that says if you do things right and do them well, the scoreboard will take care of itself.

Each of the STAR students and teachers spoke briefly before Miss Galloway learned she won the county STAR designation.

Morad El-Jourbagy, Kiwanis president-elect oversaw the meeting.
