Baseball Canes Are Undefeated in Region
The Monticello Hurricane varsity baseball squad remains undefeated in region play thus far this season thanks to recent wins over Crawford County and Macon County.
The Diamond Canes traveled to Crawford County Tuesday evening and returned as 6-3 victors. It was the fourth of 12 region games scheduled this season.
Tyler Seawright and Michael Wyatt, Jr. shared pitching duties. Seawright had three strikeouts and Wyatt had one.
Matthew Lawson earned three hits and Walt McMichael had two hits and two runs batted in (RBIs). Braden Lynch had one RBI. Brelan Crowe had two walks while Tyler Mote and Quinton Standifer each had one walk.
On Friday, the Canes took on Macon County bringing home a 9-2 win.
Cain Gonzales was on the mound earning seven strikeouts and 18 first pitch strikes (FPSs).
Stephen Arena had three hits and three RBIs. Lawson had good day as well with two walks, two RBIs, and three quality at bats (QABs). Mote added two hits while Lynch and Josh Disharoon each earned 3 QABs.
Prior to the region wins, the Canes fell 13-7 to Morgan County last Wednesday. The Bulldogs built a slow lead earning seven runs dispersed between the first three innings. Going into the final inning the Canes only trailed by one run but Morgan scored five runs in the top of the inning and the Canes failed to match that effort.
Wyatt was the pitcher on duty earning two strikeouts and 22 FPSs.
Arena had three walks and three QABs; Lawson had two walks and 3 QABS; and McMichael had 2 RBIs.
The Canes were scheduled to host non-region opponent Jackson Wednesday before hosting two home region competitions versus Lamar on Friday, March 27 and Bleckley on Tuesday, March 31. Both games are slated to begin at 5 p.m.
