Louvenia Clemons
A celebration of life for Louvenia Clemons is planned for this Saturday, April 25, at 11 a.m. at Griggs Chapel A.M. E. Church. Rev. Melvin Henry, pastor, will officiate.
Ms. Clemons as born March 30, 1920 in Eatonton (Putnam County) Ga., to Jack Jr., and Vertie Ann Johnson Clemons. To this union 10 children were born, Louvenia was the sixth.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, Sidney Lee, Willie James, John A., Thomas Jack, Curtis Roosevelt, and her sister, Georgia Bell Rooks.
At an early age she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior while attending Griggs Chapel African Methodist Church in Monticello. She was a faithful servant as a missionary worker and choir member.
She was educated in the Jasper County, Georgia, school system. At a young age her mother taught her to sew, she discovered she possessed a natural talent.
Louvenia met James Henry Few, Sr., in Eatonton. On April 18, 1943 they were joined in holy matrimony. They decided to relocate to Detroit, Mich. where the automobile industry was flourishing.
On May 7, 1945, their only son was born, James Henry Few, Jr., who she affectionately called Jimmy. While living in Detroit, she and her family joined St. Stephens African AME Church.
Louvenia used the skills her mother taught her to start her career in sewing. She attended and graduated from Wayne State University Design School. She made draperies for her friends, family, Wayne State University and the Masonic Temple.
Her sewing talents were so skillful that she could duplicate any fashion she saw in the stores including coats, suits, formal attire, wedding gowns and purses. Her work experience included her sewing business, Morris Sklar Drapery Shop, Master Drapery Shop, Fisher Body and Chrysler Corporation. In 1985 she retired from Chrysler Corporation.
After her retirement, she followed her dream to return to Eatonton to build her home. Louvenia enjoyed reading the bible, shopping, traveling, baking, knitting, quilting and gardening. Her passion was her family whom she loved dearly and was always willing to offer her hand to help. Louvenia remained in Georgia until her health failed in 2008, then she returned to Detroit to be cared for by her family.
On March 30, 2015, she celebrated her 95th birthday surrounded by loving family. The highlight of her evening was her birthday card from President Barack Obama.
Her husband, James Henry Few, Sr., preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories her son, Jimmy Few; granddaughter, Jamille Few Hill (George), her grandsons, James Henry Few, III, LaVaughn Jamel Finley, Javon Jarrett Few, Joseph Henry Few; her daughter-in-law, Portia Lyle; her great-grandchildren, James Henry IV, Portia Eugenia Teamer, George Edwin Hill, II, her great-great-grandchildren, James Henry Few V and Azuri Few, all of Detroit, Mich.; her brothers, Samuel E. Clemons and Volia Clemons, sisters-in-law, Eula B. Clemons and Maureen Clemons, Eatonton, and a host of beloved nieces, nephews and other precious relatives and friends.
