Cougars Post Wins

Piedmont Academy’s varsity baseball team dodged the raindrops long enough to take to the field last Friday defeating region foe Briarwood 11-1 on the road.

Mike Davis earned the win working four innings and allowing just two hits while striking out five. Davis did not allow a run and walked one. Hunter Knox worked the final inning allowing a hit and one unearned run.

“It was good to get back on the field,” said Piedmont coach Daniel Funt. “It was a good win. We are looking forward to the weather clearing up and getting back in a groove.”

Noah Quick helped pace the offense against Briarwood going 2-for-2 with three runs. Zach Beggs, who recently signed with Young Harris College, was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. Knox was 2-for-2 at the plate with a run and RBI.

Hunter Burson was 1-for-2 with a run while Wyatt Galloway was 1-for-3 with a run and RBI. Josh Williams, Luke Andrews and Brock Carter also added hits in the region win.

Piedmont jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and then added four more runs in both the second and fourth innings to take control.

Funt’s team traveled to John Milledge Academy Tuesday for a non-region game with the Cougars taking a 5-1 win.

Beggs earned the victory going the first three innings. Andrews then worked the next three frames while Carter closed out the seventh inning as Funt used the non-region contest to share the pitching duties.

The game was tied 1-1 after the second inning when Piedmont scored two runs in the top of the third and then pushed runs across in the fourth and sixth innings.

At the plate, Davis, Andrews, Quick, Williams and Beggs each contributed offensively. Beggs drove in two runs while Andrews and Williams both had one RBI. Quick, Carter, Beggs, Williams and Andrews all scored runs.

“It was a good varsity win, especially with us missing some key players at track,” Funt said. “I love for other guys to be able to step in and find a way to win.”

The Cougars have had to move several games to new dates due to recent weather conditions. Piedmont will travel to Brentwood Friday for a 4:30 p.m. region game before hosting Windsor Saturday at 3 p.m. in another region outing.

The team will then host Briarwood Tuesday and travel to Monsignor Donovan for additional region contests next week.

Piedmont Academy’s B-Team fell 7-1 to John Milledge Tuesday. Cameron Hammock (1-for-3, one run), Tyler Mills (1-for-3), Mike Weatherly (1-for-2, one RBI), Brett Bush (1-for-2) and Sam Younker (1-for-2).

“The B-Team just struggled on defense in a few innings, and couldn’t really get the sticks going,” Funt said. “They are improving, we just need to get some more games in.”
