Activities Abound in Monticello

Monticello was a happening place last weekend as the Jasper Jubilee was held Thursday through Saturday, with festivities on the Square both Friday and Saturday, and the Jasper County Historical Foundation annual meeting Saturday with two live bands, a barbecue lunch, and awards.
Friday evening, Anita Denny and the Hwy. 36 Band entertained on the Square A number of people brought their lawn chairs and tapped their feet to the music which lasted until 8 p.m. Children danced to the music. The Snap ‘N Turtle stayed open late for shoppers and had quite a few.
Saturday morning dawned bright and clear, and lots of vendors set up on the Square as the first day of the Market which was expanded because of the Jubilee. There were several giveaways as well as many items for sale. The market will continue this Saturday and every Saturday though October.
The Monticello varsity ‘Cane cheerleaders were among the “extras” on the Square for the Jubilee, as they were trying to raise money for new uniforms.
Over at Thomas Persons Hall, the It Matters band played before the Jasper County Historical Foundation’s annual meeting, and August Rain played after. During the meeting, Kathy Mudd was presented the preservation award for The Monticello News building. Certificates of appreciation were presented to Bennie Hawthorne, Larry Smith (who was elsewhere), and J.S. “Chick”: Wilson, which his wife picked up for him.
In addition, Ann Mercer and the late John Harvey were named special honorees and they will have plaques recognizing them placed by the white crepe myrtles that will be planted in front of the foundation’s headquarters, the old school at 319 College Street.
Sandy Dennis told of upcoming improvements to the building.
