Funeral services for Dorothy Pinkney were held May 14, 2015 at Saint James A.M.E. Church with burial in South View Cemetery. Pastor Donna Calix officiated.
She died May 8, 2015.
Sister Dorothy Kate Standifer Lewis Pinkney was born on March 12, 1930 to the late Robert Standifer and the late Cosetta Brown Standifer.
A devoted wife and mother, Sister Dorothy loved the Lord from childhood and became a member of Saint James. She faithfully attended worship, Bible study and Sunday School. She diligently served on the Missionary and the Stewardess Boards; she was the Vice President of Saint James Health Ministry and enjoyed the four health fairs the church had each year.
Mrs. Pinkney had a willingness to assist in any capacity at the church and she would help the pastor on a weekly basis. She taught her children the importance of attending church and loving the Lord.
Sister Dorothy graduated from the Jasper County public school system. She was an avid reader and gardener and she instilled the importance of education to her children whom she credited as her greatest asset.
Sister Dorothy worked at Jasper Memorial Hospital for 42 years where she brightened the lives of many patients. She was dedicated and proficient in her medical duties.
Early in life, Sister Dorothy married Harvey Lewis and three children were born, John Wesley, Belinda, and Crawford. Later, she married Israel James Pinkney, Sr. and they had three children, Israel James Jr., Cora Ann, and Sylvester Dewayne.
Sister Dorothy survivors include her children, John Wesley and Sheila Lewis of Douglasville; Belinda Epps of Augusta; Dr. Crawford and Sandra Lewis of Stone Mountain; Israel James Pinkney, Jr. of Louisville, Ky; Cora and Thomas Whidby of Monticello; Sylvester Dewayne and Angela Pinkney of Stone Mountain; sister-in-law, Ella Standifer of Monticello; a cousin who she nurtured, Alma Oliver of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren, John Jr., Michael, Vershun, Christopher, Anthony, Matthew, Denise, Anthony James, Tiffany, Britney, Jada, and Justin; 14 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Standifer, Eddie Lee Standifer, and Henry Boykin; and son-in-law, Forrest Epps.
Sister Dorothy will be sorely missed by her children, other family members, her church family, and her many friends.
