Monticello Baptist Church Dedicates Parking Lot
Monticello Baptist Church held a Dedication Service for their new parking lot following the morning worship service last Sunday, July 19.
A part of the Dedication Service was to acknowledge the generous bequest to the church by Thomas B. Persons from which funds were utilized for the new parking lot. Expenditures for the parking lot project amounted to $150,000 which included the land, surveying and engineering fees, storm drainage, curbing, and paving, and lighting. Russell Bennett Contracting Company of Monticello was the general contractor and Wallace Electric of McDonough installed the poles and LED lighting.
Bringing words of greeting at the service were Monticello Mayor Bryan Standifer, County Commission Chairman Gene Trammell and State Representative Susan Holmes. Also attending were County Commissioner Carl Pennamon and City Councilman Katherine Alexander.
Angie Lee Willis, chairman of the church’s Ministry and Missions Committee gave an overview with information about Thomas B. Persons and the history of the Ministry and Missions
Committee. Donald Tillman, chairman of Deacons, gave the Dedicatory Prayer.
Dr. Bob Whitmire, church pastor, said, “Though we will enjoy the use of the parking lot during our service times, we believe that the parking lot is in many ways a gift to our community. We want people to feel free to use it. We hope people doing business at the courthouse or with stores in town and around the square and will feel free to use the parking lot.”
“It will be also be a valuable asset for events at Rose Bowl Field for football, soccer, recreation ball games, graduation and other events,” continued Dr. Whitmire.
The church does request there be no thru traffic through the parking lot to Greene Street.
The church’s Site Study Committee studied the need and recommended the project to the church. The committee includes Russell Bennett, Joel Gaston, Matt Goolsby, Dennis Hunnicutt, Erin Lynch, Jay McMichael, Robert McMichael and Angela Walsh.
